Univariate choropleth maps display a single set of data. The one above illustrates poverty in the United States.

Bivariate Choropleth Maps

This mapping technique uses color to solve a problem of represented in four dimesions; two dimensiona-longitude and latitiude and two statistical variables.

Unclassed Choropleth Maps

This technique assigns shadings proportional to the data values so that the choropleth map doe not have to classify the data.

Classed Choropleth Maps

Lorenz Curve

www.answers.com/topic/lorenz-curve

Lorenz Curve's are graphs showing the concentration and ownership of economic quantities such as wealth and income; it's formed by plotting the cumulative distribution of the amount of the variable concerned against the cumulative frequency distribution of the individual possesing the amount.

Bilateral Graph

neuropolitics.org/defaultmay06.asp

Bilateral graphs show at least two different variations or comprasions of variables.

Similarity Matrix

www.jbaas.com/articles/vol_2_n2_c7.php
Similarity matrices are a matrix of scores that express the similarity between two data points.

Correlation Matrix

yin.che.wisc.edu/images.htm

Correlation matrices describe correlation amoung variables with square symmetrical MxM matrix with the element equal to the correlation coeffient between the variables. The diagnol elements are always equal to 1.

DEM

www.oregonfishingforum.com/other-stuff-relate...
DEM-Digital Elevation Model is a representation of ground surface topography or terrain represntation raster or as triangular irregular network built using remote sensing technique or form land surveying. This type of mapping system is based on digitally produced relief maps.

Cartographic Animations

Cartographic animations is graphic art that occurs in time.

Statistical Map

www.restmap.net/.../MapLinks_ME.htm

Statistical maps show a specific type of map in which the variation in quantity of a factor such as rainfall, population, or crops in a geopgraphic area is indicated. The above map indicates the hardiness of Maine.

Cartogram

http://politicalmaps.org/2004-presidential-election-maps/

This is a cartogram displaying the political map of the US and the states that are democrate and republicans. A cartogram with some thematic mapping variable. As shown in the map above the geometry or shape of the map is distorted in order to convey the information of the alternative variable.

Flow Map

mdianeharrison.com
Flow maps display a sequence or process. The one above show the steps to making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When displayed the process seems easy and less confusing. This could be good for teaching simple process or even chores and household duties.

Isoline Map

http://proceedings.esri.com/library/userconf/proc02/pap0167/p0167.htm

Isolines connect points of equal on a map. Like exact values including temperature and elevation, and other ratio values.

Proportional Circle Map

www.geog.ucsb.edu/.../proportional_symbols.html

Choropleth Map

http://my.ilstu.edu/~jrcarter/Geo204/Choro/Tom/

Choropleth maps are based on predefined aerial units, designed in a multi-colored cheakerboard pattern.
Each group of data displayed and organized in a ratio value, so color graded series is used to show the intensity from greatest to least. the darker the shade of a color the more intense and vice-versa goes for the less intense.

Dot Distribution Map

www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/africa/help.php
Dot distribution maps uses dots symbol to show a feature or phenomenon. This type of map rely on a visual scatter to show spatial pattern as shown in the map above.

Propaganda Map

Propaganda maps are used as persausive cartography. These maps are usually created for poltical propaganda as a means to sway the opinions of the people.
This made itself shows how people percieved that Germany would be attack, false representation can lead people to believe false information as done so in this map.

Hypsometric Map

Hypsometric maps shows elevations by contours or by shading, tinting or batching.

PLSS Map

  1. www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/.../landrecords.htm

PLSS- Public Land Survey System is a way of subdividing and describing land in the United States. PLSS is used to divide public land domain, owned by the Federal government for the benefit of the citizens of the US. PLSS land domain is subject to subdivision by a rectangular system of surveying.

Cadastrel Map

Cadastrel maps are illustrated in a sense to show boundaries and ownership of land parcels. A cadastre usually includes details of ownership, the tenure, and and precise location, the dimesions, the cultivations if rural, and value of individual parcels of land.

Thematic Map

This type of map is designed to display a particular theme associated with a specific geographic area. These maps can portray physical, social, political, cultural, economical, sociological, agricultural or any other aspect of a city, region, nation or continent.

Topographic Map

This type of map is characterized by large scale detail and quantitative representation of relief, usually using contour lines in modern mapping. This type of map usually shows natural and man-made features and is a combination of two or more maps combined as a map series.

Planimetric Map

A map indicating only horizontal positions of features; without regard to elevation, veritical information is completely ignored.

Mental Map

A mental map refers to a person's personal point of view perception of their own world. Each person's mental map is completely different from the next. It's a type of mental processing composed of psychological transformations by which an individual can aquire, code, store, recall and decode information about relative locations.

egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs08801.html
A digital raster graphic (DRG) is a scanned image of a U.S geological survey topographic map. The scanned image includes all map collar information. The image inside the map neatline is georeferanced to the surface of the Earth.

Isopleths

www.meteoswiss.admin.ch/.../ozone/umkehr.html
An isopleth is a curve or line of equal values. All of the following are prime examples of isopleths: isobar, isoyets, isotachs etc.

Isopach

www.republicenergy.com/.../Barnett.aspx
An isopach is an isoline that connects points of equal thickness of geological stratum formation or group of formations.

Isohyets

An isohyet is a line drawn on a map connecting points that recieve equal rainfall.

Isotachs

The map shows isotachs, lines on a given surface connecting points with equal wind speed together with isobars.

Isobars

Isobars are lines that connect points of equal atmospheric pressure on weather maps. They are drawn so that they never cross each other. Meterologists use isobars on weather maps to depict atomospheric pressure changes over an area and to make predictions concerning wind flow.

Scatterplot

picsdigger.com/domain/epsb.ca/
A scatterplot is a useful summary of a set of bivariate date (two variables), usually drawn before working out a correlation coefficient or to fit a line of regression. Its a good visul to see the relationship between two variables, and aids in the interpretation of correlation coefficient or regression line. There will eith be a postive, negative or non- association depending on the relationship between the two variables.

Stem and Leaf Plot

A stem and leaf plot summarizes the shape of a set of data and provides extra details regarding individual data. The data is arranged by value place. The digits in the largest place is referred to as the "stems" and the digits in the smallest place is referred to as the "leaves". This particular stem and leaf plot displays the ages of the people that attended a family reunion.

Star plots are used to examine the relative values for single data points and to locate similar or disimliar points. Star plots are generated in a mulit-plot format with many stars on each page, each star representing one observation.

Box Plot

This simple box plot, this type of graph is usually used in descriptive statistics to display the disturbution of data and the relationship in between based on the five number summary. The image is pretty self explanatory showing the number ranging from the minimun, first quartile, median, third quartile and maximum.
